"Wissenschaft" ist ein Schlüsselbegriff insbesondere moderner kultureller Konstellationen, der in eigentümlicher Weise zugleich durch strikte Verbindlichkeit und durch eine große Offenheit gekennzeichnet ist: Wissenschaft produziert Wissen, das den striktesten erkenntnistheoretischen Standards genügen soll, zugleich aber verändert sich Wissenschaft ständig.
Schon während des Holocaust selbst begannen die Täter, das Verbrechen zu verbergen, um es später abstreiten zu können. Ab 1942 ließ das NS-Regime gezielt die Beweise dafür vernichten, um die Täter zu decken und mit den Opfern auch die Erinnerung an sie auszulöschen.
